Nature Walks
For a short walk in spring, I take to the Nature Trail at Lockwood Parcel B. The entrance is directly across from the steel gate on Lockwood Lane. Rewards occur immediately upon entering the trail. Fish Brook gushes by on your right while skunk cabbage and Marsh Marigolds peek up from the wetland to the left of the trail. Along side the trail delicate Anemones greet you. As you approach the Lockwood dam, a carpet of purple myrtle appears along with the roar of water racing over the dam. After rounding the corner, you approach the clearing under tall evergreens with a view of the many Azaleas and Rhododendrons planted by the Lockwoods. Keep an eye out for Hepatica by the trail and a kingfisher diving in the pond. If time allows after retracing your steps, cross over Lockwood Lane and enter Lockwood Parcel A at the steel gate. Shortly take the second left off the main Bay Circuit Trail. This side trail leads downhill to the most peaceful spot in Boxford beside a widened area in Fish Brook. Take five to relax here and then return rejuvenated, elated, and ready for the rest of the day.— Alison Chase
