Lockwood Forest > is a great place to ski in the winter. With its wide, ambling trails and sunny field, it offers a mix of fun and sun! Here, I have to admit to travelling out of town for another great ski area – Georgetown-Rowley State Forest has enough trails to keep you busy for the whole morning...

The 2 Town Forests > are ideal for a ski. Only one hill of note and lovely beech trees that still rustle with their leaves much of the winter. Not uncommon to hear a barred owl in the beechwood Town Forest. As there is still a large variety of winter mammals, tracking is fun in both forests also. — Bev and Dave Ingalls

In winter, cross country skiing around open and sunny Haynes Field at the corner of Middleton Rd. and Main St. is a joy. If you have parked at the former Town Hall, Cole School (when not in session), or The Community Center, an easy entrance exists through the eastern end of the stone wall along Middleton Rd. One trip around the field's perimeter gets you warmed up. There is a small hill on the eastern side of the field which is quite manageable for those of us who are not expert on the skis. There you can get a bit of the thrill of going downhill without risking your life and a bit of aerobic workout climbing back up for more runs down. One more loop around the perimeter is a breeze in the tracks you've already made and then your allotted half hour of exercise is finished. I like knowing someone could see me from the road if I should happen to totally crash and love seeing the hawk that tends to fly by overhead there.
